Fighting Malaria

One child dies of malaria every minute. In Malawi alone, the infection is responsible for one-third of pediatric hospital admissions and a third of child deaths.

Led by Dr. Terrie Taylor, a team of MSU researchers are conducting ground-breaking research on cerebral malaria—research that emerged out of a partnership with the University of Malawi College of Medicine.

In line with MSU’s principles of partnership, Taylor emphasizes the importance of living in and working with local communities when investigating health problems. She now lives and works in Malawi for six months out of every year, often accompanied by medical students and other researchers from MSU.
