Are civil society organizations and universities that are not members of AAP eligible for funding?
- Yes, as long as the partnership team has at least one PI from MSU and one PI from a second consortium member then additional PIs from other organizations are welcome on the team. There is no limit to the number of partners that may be included in the proposal, but
What are eligible expenses?
- Funding can cover travel and/or associated meeting or workshop costs. The budget may also cover salary/fringe expenses up to a total of $5,000 USD.
Will applications to continue work started through a previous round of AAP funding be considered for this round of Transforming Institutions Strategic Funding?
- Yes. While AAP will give priority to those who have not previously received funding from AAP, previous grantees are eligible to apply.
How do applicants get the name and email address of an MSU fiscal officer?
- The MSU PI will be responsible for identifying the appropriate fiscal officer for their team, depending on their unit’s organizational structure
Is there an age limit for people on the proposal teams?
Will AAP help proposal teams identify AAP faculty members for potential collaboration on proposals?
- Yes, if a proposal team is unable to identify a partner at an AAP institution, you can contact the AAP management team for assistance.
Since the grant is meant for “seed funding” to promote new and emerging partnerships, should the proposal include the project that the team intends to implement in the futrue?
- Yes. While it is understood that the grant funding should be used to promote new and emerging partnerships, and that the future work envisioned by the team will not be completed during the Transforming Institutions Strategic Funding period of performance; applications should clearly outline the team’s future plans and anticipated results of the partnership. Including, potential sources of external funding that would support the partnership and any other pertinent information for the review committee to consider when evaluating the submission.
What is the scope of the funding?
- AAP seeks proposals from consortium members and their partners for projects that directly address AAP's Transforming Institutions pillar - transforming institutions to be better able to participate in sustainable, equitable, and research-driven partnerships that make a broader impact on transforming lives.

Successful applicants will receive up to $20,000 USD in seed funding to develop international strategic partnerships with universities, institutions of higher education and research, and/or organizations in the public and/or NGO sectors.
Proposed projects should focus specifically on institutional and capacity strengthening. This could include projects that: aim to reinforce institutional strengths; contribute to individuals’ capacity strengthening, which will lead to institutional strengthening; plan for the creation of new units or institution-wide initiatives; and/or pilot new approaches to support research, teaching, or outreach that can be scaled up across the institution(s).
Is there any opportunity for a second phase of funding to increase a program’s impact?
- Not necessarily. The grant is meant to be seed funding to help launch partnerships/programs/processes with the understanding that teams would seek additional external sources of funding to carry-on further program activities.
