Kalila standing in front of the Colesium in RomeDuring the summer of May 2023, I took flight to Rome for my first study abroad experience. Before arriving in Italy my knowledge of the culture was very textbook. I had previously read several beginner guides on what to expect in Rome, but no article could have prepared me for the magical world of Italian culture.

While abroad I tried to immerse myself in traditional Italian customs and cuisines. I tried gelato from the best of the best. Pro Tip: The best gelato can’t be seen. Gelato should be covered with a metal lid. I also tried famous dishes like Florentine steak, suppli, and zucchini flower pizza!

I’m here to bust the myth about no cold drinks in Europe. Almost always I was able to get a cold refreshing drink. Although ice is limited it was available more than I expected. So don’t be afraid to ask! If you are a fellow cold-water drinker like me, you will definitely survive in Italy.

I loved that our apartments were in a non-tourist location so that I could engage with various local Italians. It allowed me to practice my Italian. I’ll be honest, at first, I really struggled with speaking Italian. I was frustrated that I kept making mistakes. But I continued to try and didn’t give up. As a fashion enthusiast, I loved spotting different Italian fashion trends. A leather blazer, a sleek boot, or a flowy gown could be seen almost every day. I added a few Italian trends to my current wardrobe. If you have an interest in vintage fashion Italy is the perfect place for your next shopping spree.

One of the best lessons I learned during my program is when creating international advertising campaigns avoid the self-reference criterion. The self-reference criterion is when you assume other cultures operate with the same principles as you would. As a Marketing major, I will be working on advertisements and campaigns for various audiences. Someday that might be for an international market. The tools I learned in class have prepared me to create campaigns that speak to an international audience in a culturally competent manner.

My study abroad is one of the highlights of my Michigan State experience! I made forever friends and had unforgettable experiences. I’m so happy I decided to study abroad at MSU.
