I developed greater independence, confidence, and adaptability, while also enriching my empathy and cultural awareness. Building meaningful relationships with my host family, local teachers, New Zealand citizens, and fellow Spartan educators enriched my experience and widened my perspective. Immersing myself in a new culture taught me to be more open-minded. Navigating a bilingual environment where English and Māori were spoken challenged me to improve my communication skills. Learning about Māori culture and language, and understanding cultural differences, helped me become more adept at interacting in multicultural settings.
One of the most valuable lessons from my time in New Zealand was the importance of incorporating indigenous perspectives into education and daily life. The respect for Māori culture and the integration of Māori values and language into the curriculum were truly eye-opening. Witnessing how
I initially was uncertain what my time abroad would be like, but I never anticipated the profound impact it would have.
