It allowed me to enhance my academics by receiving education from a new school in an entirely new culture. This allowed me to not only learn about Italy but also experience it first-hand.

On a personal level I feel this experience helped me grow in many ways. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to try many new things that I will forever remember. It also allowed me to meet so many new people who share similar interests with me.

My time abroad also improved my ability to communicate in non-English speaking environments. It pushed me to be more observant and learn some of the native language so I could communicate. However, in situations where I didn’t know the language, such as when we traveled to Malta, it taught me to communicate in other ways. For example, using hand gestures or facial expressions to get your message across. This was very interesting because it shows how similar humans are across the globe.

Throughout my five weeks abroad I stayed in Italy for the majority of the program. During this time, I took an Italian culture and language class where I learned lots of basic phrases and gestures to communicate. In addition to this, I learned about cultural norms, traditions, and food. This allowed me to feel very comfortable when exploring the new neighborhoods.

I also met many new people at my university and many local Elizabeth and friend standing in front of the Roman Colesium at duskpeople throughout Rome. This was a great way to make new friends and continue to build my network. When I went into study abroad I was very nervous. I didn’t know how many people I would get along with and was nervous how I would handle the culture shock. However, I met so many friends and had a great time adjusting to the new culture. In the end, I was so happy I said yes to this experience and was sad when I had to come home.

Rome will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I would encourage everyone to study abroad if they are given the opportunity.
