Madeline holding a Spartans Will flag by the sea in ItalyI will always remember the moment my parents dropped me off at O’Hare airport, wishing me good luck, and crying at the thought of my departure. I tried to keep a strong face for them, but inside I was gripped by fear. When I thought about studying abroad, I never imagined building a community that would last forever.

I went through security and found my gate; I sat down and anxiously began my literature review that my host professor had sent me. My flight got delayed a few hours, leaving me alone with my thoughts in an uncomfortable terminal. I thought to myself, “Am I capable of doing this alone?” It was during this long wait I felt a tap on my shoulder.

“Are you studying abroad in Sorrento too?”

This simple question marked the beginning of what would become some of the most meaningful
friendships of my life.

Once I arrived in Sorrento, My experience rapidly transformed into life enrichment. My new friends and I took on a multitude of adventures, exploring not only the beauty of Italy, but also other regions of Europe. Through these journeys, I learned invaluable lessons such as resilience, adaptability, and the joy of connecting with others despite having cultural and language differences. The biggest lesson I took away Madeline and friends on the coast of Italyfrom Italian culture was to enjoy life.

There was so much hidden landscape that was never taken for granted, and I will carry that with me and practice slowing down to enjoy the natural beauty that constantly surrounds me. These experiences and friendships are a huge part of who I am today.

In addition to life experiences, I also got to expand my knowledge within the field of biology. My research consisted of monitoring biodiversity in the marine protected areas in the Punta Campanella. This work consisted of snorkeling, mapping out transects, and collecting litter. I gained practical skills in data management, and the importance of protecting our oceans and seas. This research enhanced my academic knowledge, as well as instilling an appreciation for marine life and sustainable practices.Madeline standing in ancient ruins in Italy

My summer abroad has set me up to be a more successful individual aspiring to go into the field of healthcare. My goal is to become a genetic counselor, and the diverse connections I made will allow me to be more successful in building a relationship with my future patients. In addition to this, I can build off my research background to potentially develop more tools for treatment and screening options.

When I left this beautiful place, I called home for ten weeks, I walked away knowing that I grew professionally and personally. The friendships and knowledge I gained are the most valuable souvenirs I brought home with me.
